SEATTLE -- Chris Young and Robinson Cano arrived in Seattle with fanfare at opposite ends of the spectrum. Seattle couldnt celebrate the arrival of Cano enough. Young was a last-second addition plucked at the end of spring training. Each has proven invaluable in keeping Seattle at .500 at the 50-game mark of the season. Young pitched shutout ball until Albert Pujols homered in the seventh inning, Cano had three hits and two RBIs to raise his average to .332, and the Mariners beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-1 on Monday. While the production from Cano was expected after he signed a $240 million contract to join the Mariners, what Young has contributed is a surprise, especially with Seattle down two expected starters in the rotation. "I was trying to find the adjectives to describe this guy today, but what a godsend hes been for this rotation," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. "Hes been tremendous. In and out, up and down, he never wavers and knows what he wants to do." Young (4-2) kept the Angels without a hit until Kole Calhouns single with one out in the sixth inning. An inning later, Pujols hit his 506th career home run, pulling within three of Gary Sheffield for 24th on baseballs all-time homer list. Young lasted only two more batters after Pujols homer, getting pulled after issuing a walk to Raul Ibanez. He struck out five and walked three. But Youngs strong pitching at Safeco Field continued. In four starts at home this season, Young is 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA. It was a solid rebound for Young, who got knocked around in losing his previous two starts. He gave up 10 hits and five runs in losing to Minnesota and allowed four runs and seven hits in a loss to Texas last week. In Youngs last seven starts for Seattle, the Mariners are 5-2. Its an impressive turnaround considering Young spent all of last season out of the majors after shoulder surgery. "When youre out there competing, you expect to win. I wouldnt take the ball if I didnt expect to go out and compete and win," Young said. "To say its surprising, after all the hard work and time rehabbing I put in I would say no." After McClendon lamented Seattles production following losses over the weekend to Houston, the Mariners responded with five runs in the first two innings off Tyler Skaggs (4-2). Seattle scored three unearned runs with two outs in the second. The top three hitters in Seattles order did the damage against Skaggs. James Jones scored twice, and Michael Saunders tripled, singled and scored two runs. Cano singled in each of his first three at-bats a day after his streak of reaching base ended at 31 games. "Thats just part of the game sometimes where you take advantage of a pitch over the plate," Cano said. "Sometimes there are games where they throw you that same pitch and you foul it off. ... We took advantage and thats what we want. Those are the little things you want to do." Skaggs wasnt helped by his defence in the second inning when shortstop Erick Aybar couldnt handle Jones one-hopper with two outs. The miscue allowed Dustin Ackley to score and opened the door for two more runs on Saunders triple and Canos infield single. Despite the early trouble, Skaggs threw seven innings and struck out eight. "Tyler understood keeping us in the game," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. McCarthy turned in seven strong innings, and Paul Goldschmidt drove in two runs to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Monday night. After a shaky first inning, the 6-foot-7 McCarthy (3-8) allowed only four runners over his final six innings. It was his first win since he beat San Diego on May 28. His other victory was a shutout at Miami on May 18. "I felt I carried my weight, and nice to see a positive result," McCarthy said. "I never felt that strong this season and went back to watch video from before I went on the disabled list last season. I saw some mechanical issues, made a few adjustments, and am satisfied with the results." McCarthy lasted only into the third inning in his previous start, a 10-7 loss to the Reds. He allowed seven runs and eight hits in 2 1-3 innings. Goldschmidt stretched his NL-leading RBI total to 103 with his first triple of the season and a ground out. He has the most RBIs for an Arizona hitter since Luis Gonzalez drove in 104 in 2003. After Will Venable and Alexi Amarista opened the game with singles, Yonder Alonso hit a grounder wide of first. Goldschmidt fielded the ball and threw to second to force Amarista, but shortstop Didi Gregorius throw to first was wide and beyond McCarthy, who was covering the bag. Venable scored the unearned run. But that was all the Padres would get against McCarthy and Eury De La Rosa, who pitched a perfect final two innings. He threw 93 pitches in seven innings. Adam Eaton was hit by a pitch to open the fourth, and Goldschmidt hit a twisting drive into the right field corner that hit off the fence. Martin Prado then followed with a sacrifice fly to give Arizona a 2-1 lead. Prados grounder to third with the bases loaded in the sixth was booted by Headley. Two more runs scored to make it 4-1. Prado has hit in 11 of his last 12 games for a .361 average, and has driven in 19 runs in that stretch. "Im taking advantage of the situation," he said.
